Dry needling is a form of therapy which uses acupuncture needles to target muscular pain associated with overuse or injury. The needles are inserted into trigger points (localised tender sports within the muscle) to relax muscle fibres, reduce pain and restore normal function.
The mot common physical injuries and ailments almost always involve muscles. For this reason, dry needling is a fantastic treatment for a wide variety of conditions. We use dry needling therapy to help with:
-
General muscle tension
-
Tension headaches
-
Joint pain
-
Golfer's elbow
-
Tennis elbow
-
Ankle sprains
-
Plantar fasciitis
At the start of your first appointment, a detailed case history will be taken. This allows for a greater understanding or any current or past symptoms you may have. This time will also be taken to make sure dry needling is a suitable treatment for you. The type of needling used will be adapted to the condition you are presenting with as it is a very targeted therapy.
Most patients will respond favourably to dry needling therapy. In the same way that you feel a degree of soreness are a manual therapy treatment, you may also feel sore after dry needling. However, the soreness should only last for 12-24 hours.
Whilst the practice of dry needling is very safe, it is not a suitable therapy to be used when the following are present:
-
Abnormal bleeding tendency
-
Compromised immune system from illness/disease or medication (GP consent required)
-
Blood thinning medications (GP consent required)
-
Vascular diseases
-
Diabetes
-
Pregnancy
-
Fibromyalgia
-
Botox or other implants
-
Needle phobia
