Tips for drinking more water

Did you know, without water, humans wouldn’t exist? Water is essential for life. A person can survive for several weeks without any food, but can only survive a few days without water. That’s because our bodies are made up of approximately 60% water so it’s vital that our water intake is sufficient to meet our body’s needs.

We normally take in approximately 20% of our daily water intake just from food. Different foods have different water contents; for example, different meats can range from 40-75% water and vegetables can consist of as much as 95%. Food alone isn’t enough to keep our hydration levels up though so the rest must come from the water that we consume during the day. Most guidelines recommend around eight glasses a day for optimal hydration.

Being properly hydrated comes with a huge list of benefits. Here are just some reasons why drinking plenty of water is good for you:

  • Maintains your body temperature

  • Improves your energy levels and immunity

  • Better physical performance during exercise

  • Can reduce frequency of headaches

  • Helps to improve mental health

  • Better skin condition

  • Better digestive health and relieves constipation

  • Can help towards weight loss

For some people, drinking enough water can seem like a real chore. Here are some tips to make drinking plenty of water easier:

  • Keep a bottle of water with you e.g. in your bag, at work, in the car etc.

  • Switch to decaff teas and coffees

  • Eat more fruits and vegetables

  • If you find the taste of water boring or bland, spice it up a little with your favourite fruits or veg. Simply chop them up, put them into the water and let the natural juices flavour the water. The combinations are endless, why not experiment to find your favourite flavour?

  • If you simply forget to drink water, why not set a little reminder on your phone? Schedule it to remind you every hour or two, to have a quick glass of water. Or come up with a rule like, every time the minute hand strikes twelve, have a glass of water.

Before you know it, you’ll be starting to feel all the amazing benefits of being properly hydrated.

Give it a try!
